If you've read the Captive Prince trilogy, this is a must-read to add more depth to the story。 Four short stories expand on the trilogy with the most important being The Summer Palace, which expands on the lives of King Damen and Prince Laurent after they are officially known as a couple。 Read this book after the trilogy because the framework of the larger tale is necessary to get the most from these stories。 Do not skip this book for the very satisfying added dimensions it brings。 If you've read the Captive Prince trilogy, this is a must-read to add more depth to the story。 Four short stories expand on the trilogy with the most important being The Summer Palace, which expands on the lives of King Damen and Prince Laurent after they are officially known as a couple。 Read this book after the trilogy because the framework of the larger tale is necessary to get the most from these stories。 Do not skip this book for the very satisfying added dimensions it brings。 。。。more

I didn't enjoy this as much as I did the trilogy。 But the stories were entertaining, and I liked reading some more about the secondary characters。 The story with Charls was a fun caper。 "Pet," about Ancel, was amusing。 "The Summer Palace," of course, was the highlight of the collection, the epilogue that was needed to Kings Rising。 I didn't enjoy this as much as I did the trilogy。 But the stories were entertaining, and I liked reading some more about the secondary characters。 The story with Charls was a fun caper。 "Pet," about Ancel, was amusing。 "The Summer Palace," of course, was the highlight of the collection, the epilogue that was needed to Kings Rising。 。。。more

Overall I'd probably give these short stories 3 stars but The Summer Palace one was so wholesome and heartwarming that I give 4 stars just for that one alone。 Overall I'd probably give these short stories 3 stars but The Summer Palace one was so wholesome and heartwarming that I give 4 stars just for that one alone。 。。。more

Green but for a Season - 4/5 Of course I loved it because it talked about Jord's backstory but I wished there was more regarding Aimeric, slightly disappointing。The Summer Palace - 4/5Other reviews made this seem amazing, but it was kind of underwhelming。 Still sweet though, I liked it。The Adventures of Charls, the Veretian Cloth Merchant - 4/5 (?)This one was so funny and I loved the sort of epilogue elements it provided, and the irony of course。Pet - 5/5 (?)Wtf this was so good, I want a full Green but for a Season - 4/5 Of course I loved it because it talked about Jord's backstory but I wished there was more regarding Aimeric, slightly disappointing。The Summer Palace - 4/5Other reviews made this seem amazing, but it was kind of underwhelming。 Still sweet though, I liked it。The Adventures of Charls, the Veretian Cloth Merchant - 4/5 (?)This one was so funny and I loved the sort of epilogue elements it provided, and the irony of course。Pet - 5/5 (?)Wtf this was so good, I want a full length novel。 I did not expect to like this one at all and it might have been my favorite。 Ancel is an absolute icon。 。。。more

These were delightful。 I didn't enjoy the Jord/Aimeric one that much but I liked the other three a lot。 I didn't think anything would make me like Ancel, but now I wish his story had been longer。 These were delightful。 I didn't enjoy the Jord/Aimeric one that much but I liked the other three a lot。 I didn't think anything would make me like Ancel, but now I wish his story had been longer。 。。。more

5/5 You were a force of nature。 It was infuriating to fight you。 Frightening to have you on my side。 This short story collection sheds more light on various events that happened in the trilogy from other character’s perspectives as well as gives us some information on what happened after the trilogy and some closure on some of the traumatic events that happened。I would definitely recommend this to people who enjoyed the Captive Prince trilogy。 While it is not essential to the story, it certainly 5/5 You were a force of nature。 It was infuriating to fight you。 Frightening to have you on my side。 This short story collection sheds more light on various events that happened in the trilogy from other character’s perspectives as well as gives us some information on what happened after the trilogy and some closure on some of the traumatic events that happened。I would definitely recommend this to people who enjoyed the Captive Prince trilogy。 While it is not essential to the story, it certainly does its job well adding to it。 。。。more

Yes, the rest of the stories are great, but this book earns the fifth star solely because of how much I respect Ancel’s hustle。

The writing wasn’t up to her usual standard。 The whole collection needed a bit more editing。 But。 I appreciated the questions it answered, and the characters explored in stories 1 and 4。 3 was my favorite and hysterical at points! The fourth/last ended on a bittersweet note that wrapped up the collection well。 more of a 3。5 but i really liked the latter half of the book。

Everyone who was frustrated by the ending of Kings Rising should read "The Summer Palace。" I mean specifically the short story "The Summer Palace。" It's everything - well, almost everything - I could have wanted as an ending to the trilogy, and then some。There is, of course, a beautiful, sweet, happy sex scene - finally, a happy sex scene for these two, where they can just delight in being together! But because it's C。S。 Pacat, there is of course also a lot of Stuff (aka Baggage), which the two of them deal with in the gardens and baths *before* the sex scene。I am not sure that will ever stop。 I think these two will have to work through their trauma for the rest of their lives。 (Kind of the same thing is happening with my own trilogy, as I keep writing these kinds of scenes that happen after the story - I think I'm writing a cute sex scene, but then it always leads into Deep Conversation about the Heavy Stuff that the characters have been through。)Two things were missing for me though。 I will try to be delicate to avoid spoilers。 1) Their future together is still only hinted at。 I'm ridiculously curious about how they will actually implement this relationship of theirs politically。 2) They've worked through just about everything else between them, but the。。。issue。。。regarding Laurent's prior sexual experiences is never overtly addressed。 Considering that it was clearly a barrier to Laurent's enjoyment of sex - not to mention something that Damen, uh, felt strongly about when he found out - wouldn't it be something they would want to deal with?Overall, though, it was definitely a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy。Now regarding the other stories:"Green but for a Season" - Just seeing that there was a story about Jord and Aimeric made my heart hurt。 Because if there's a story, that means they actually felt something for each other, which makes the whole thing worse。 But reading it also made it better, in a way。 The story never quite reveals how exactly Aimeric felt - did he really feel something for Jord, or was it just a calculated ploy - but there are hints。 That's the masterful subtlety of C。S。 Pacat, keeping you guessing, never quite coming out and saying it。 But even with the uncertainty, knowing that this might have been something deeper makes the relationship and what happens in book 2 resonate more。 Although I also feel so bad for Jord now - knowing how much the captaincy meant to him, and then Aimeric is the one who gets it taken away from him。"The Adventures of Charls" - This story is hilarious, until it suddenly gets serious and heavy for a bit at the end。 This was just a fun read that had me laughing out loud and annoying my girlfriend when she was trying to sleep :P"Pet" - I got surprisingly invested in this story (novella, really - it's about 50 pages)。 Initially, it was the one I was least interested in reading。 However, two things drew me in: 1) I accidentally, or not so accidentally, glimpsed the last page ahead of time, and so I had some idea where the story was going。 2) Berenger came off as possibly on the spectrum, which made me very sympathetic。After I finished it, I reread the last few pages several times, and kept thinking about the characters afterward - a sure sign that a story pulled on my heartstrings。 I was so happy for them :) And all this just from a 50-page novella。 C。S。 Pacat really is a master at this kind of thing。So in all, I highly recommend this short story collection。 "The Summer Palace" helps wrap up the Captive Prince trilogy, and the rest of the stories are (bitter)sweet, fun, and full of feels, respectively。(And don't be put off by the back cover text。 It is。。。so weirdly worded, but the stories are just as well written as you would expect from CS Pacat。) 。。。more

The Summer Palace is simply too precious for this ugly world — it was everything I dared not let myself dream it would be。 I was worried that Green But For a Season would stamp my heart into the dirt like a spent cigarette, but I actually enjoyed it plenty。 It’s somewhat about the development of Jord and Aimeric’s relationship, but there are also a bunch of flashbacks that describe how Jord came to be a part of the prince’s guard。 And a brief moment where we get to see Laurent and Damen from his The Summer Palace is simply too precious for this ugly world — it was everything I dared not let myself dream it would be。 I was worried that Green But For a Season would stamp my heart into the dirt like a spent cigarette, but I actually enjoyed it plenty。 It’s somewhat about the development of Jord and Aimeric’s relationship, but there are also a bunch of flashbacks that describe how Jord came to be a part of the prince’s guard。 And a brief moment where we get to see Laurent and Damen from his perspective as they develop their tenuous truce。 Loved that。 And The Adventures of Charls was super fun。 O, Charls you beautiful beautiful idiot。 The scene with the rabbit。 I shan’t give anything away because it’s too good to spoil, except to say that Instruments of Refinement is the name of my new all-kithara cover band。 And then there’s the Ansel story。 It’s good。 It’s well written。 It’s interesting。 Just, I had built it up in my mind (despite desperately pleading with myself not to)。 The rest of the stories were in chronological order so my stupid brain was like, maybe the last one takes place after Laurent’s ascension and we’ll get to learn more about the merging of the two kingdoms and such。 So I had a nebulous accidental expectation, and that was a mistake。 It’s set during the 1st book, so the only new things we learn are about Ansel。 Who is fine as far as unlikeable characters who you learn to sympathize with a bit go。 The scenes that overlap with Laurent and Damen don’t gain all that much by being depicted from another POV。 And it was the longest of the four stories, when what I would have liked above all else is more of the other stories。 So there’s that。 I wish this one had come first in the collection because it was a bummer to end on it。 。。。more

I loved that these stories allowed us to not only catch a glimpse of things happening after book three but also allowed us to see clearer the motivations of some like Ancel。 I really wish we could see Laurent’s ascension and their wedding in canon。 I’m not ready to be done with these characters。 I want to see how they bring their people together。
